Doug-
My immediate reaction to your site was one of guffaws and accolades. Now, I am hungry. Please contact me soon so that we can plot out how to overthrow the literary establishment once and for all.
Yours in conceit-

On the day that Doug's work is read at St John's I will climb through grime of my grave and ring that fucking bell until the reverberations turn my bones to dust.

Poetry/writing that appears to be the scum of the heart may still be veiled in secrecy. It is up to the indivual experiencing the art to get to the truth, and truth can be relative.
:)
I like your work.
See you around the Lair:)

it is good to know that there is still such a free-swinging door into your head - or is it onto the world?

Doug,
I especially enjoy the unique mix of gravity and sensitivity that goes into statements like the one below which was part of your reflection on the nature of political artists and the relevance of their work.
"...stepping out from behind the shelter of the objective correlative, ... vulnerable to the barbs of specificity that contrast so sharply with the impressions and generalities of art."
I am still trying to get a sense of the world or worlds that your characters exist in, what kind of consciousness wrought them, what drives them, etc. I think that your foray into political reflection is important. You characters probably live in extremely polically charged worlds.
Keep writing. I will learn from you.

Hey man I dug the stuff. Some of it was a little hard to follow without the intros but I still enjoyed them all. There's quite a variety of material there. The bit with the cows is engraved in my head moreso than in "Chien Andalou". I don't know if it was contrived at all from that but none the less it left a great impression. The excerpts are a good length and leave you wanting more. Hope all is well.

Although the world is full of mediocracy and mindless drivel that extends to cover every inch of this great mud-ball called earth, DC Smith still takes that shit personaly. It's like every new reality TV show or Paris Hilton escapade is an affront his own artistic sensebility. I for one am glad to know that we have someone fighting the asthetic fight who can spew rightious bile, as well as entertaining children's stories in the same breath.

You always know an artist is getting dangerous when he starts referring to himself in the third person. I probably haven't had enough coffee this morning to construct any more cohesive sentances, but let me offer this small bit of pedantry: It looks like DC (as he now refers to himself) has a bug up his butt to be big, so it seems; my only hope is the that world is prepared for the keen insight and satyrical genius that DC Smith posesses . . . and that he doesn't get shot within a year.

I have the great pleasure of counting DCSmith as one of my friends. So I know first hand that whether in the medium of hatchet-in-radio, juggling-fire, or the slightly toned down pen-on-paper his creative brilliance has an intensity that cannot be ignored. I am looking forward to future postings.

Hi DC
I was in the Navy, too (1989 - '93). Made it to E5 as a journalist at NAS Alameda all four years. I had a blast. Anyhow. Glad that link worked.
